IF you’re heading to the Lakes this summer, and you love books, why not come along to one of our Meet the Author events.
They are open to everyone and admission is free; just turn up and be ready to be entertained, thrilled and delighted by some eminent writers.
Next week (June 25) we will welcome Gordon Emery, a prolific author of many local books including Curious Cumbria. Born on the edge of the Lake District in the small market town of Ulverston, Gordon was brought up visiting the lakes and fells. He now lives in Ambleside where he still goes walking, canoeing and sailing to relax, and rebuilds drystone walls in the Lakes Parish, often teaching others.
His latest book is a rip-roaring ride through Cumbria past and present. From crashing continents to Stone Age axes and stone circles, Roman roads, ruins and canals to Saxon runes, Viking sagas, Norman castles, hunting abbeys and crusaders, mines, mills and markets. Read about poets and writers from Wordsworth, Ruskin and Southey, to Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome. Look under the surface in Cumbria to see how nature and man has changed the landscape. Find out about pack horses and coaches, the guide writers who attracted tourists to the Lake District, steam trains and steam ships. Explore Cumbria and the Lake District through this photographic album of oddities, ancient and modern.

In July our guest is Denise Clarke, a novelist who writes books for young adults, including the Top Thorn Farm series. Denise has lived in Cumbria since the late 1970s, having moved from rural Derbyshire. She has a BA in English and Art & Social History of the 20th century and an MA in Ruskin Studies from Lancaster University. She says: “My interest in 19th century social and cultural themes continued into several years as an associate member of an academic research programme at the university. I am also a qualified School Librarian and have worked at two local secondary schools.” She will be here on July 16.

Then on August 27th we are delighted to welcome David Howe OBE, a senior figure in the world of social work and eminent writer of several definitive books in his field. But he will be talking here about a book we love very much, Rocks and Rain, Reason and Romance. David tells the full story of the Lake District, England’s most dramatic landscape, home to vistas of stunning beauty and a rich heritage, an area of England that fascinates, inspires – and has bewitched David for a lifetime.

Please come along to our events, bring your friends and family, and there’s no need to book. The dates again (all start at 7pm) :
June 25 – Gordon Emery
July 16: Denise Clarke
August 27: David Howe
