Grasmere Sports is the annual Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show, one of the Lake District’s oldest and most distinctive sporting gatherings. It has been running for around 175 years, combining traditional Lakeland sports with family entertainment and a strong community/agricultural heritage.
Grasmere Sports 2026
- Date: Sunday 30 August 2026 — the Bank Holiday weekend.
- Location: The Showfield, Stock Lane, Grasmere, Cumbria, LA22 9SJ.
- Opening: The formal event opening is at 10:00am with the Bellman; the detailed provisional programme lists gates opening at 9:00am.
- Entry: Free for everyone in 2026, with organisers replacing the usual admission charge with a parking charge. Walking, cycling or arriving by bus therefore makes the day completely free.
What you’ll see
The heart of the event is traditional Lakeland sport:
- Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling
- Fell running, including the famous Guides Race
- Hound racing/trails
- Tug of war
- Children’s athletics and races
- Paragliding
- Fun Dog Show
- The Fell Gather, reflecting Grasmere’s origins as a sheep show and its agricultural connections.
There is also a substantial entertainment programme in 2026. Wonder Wheelers will bring unusual bicycles and unicycles; Drum Nation will provide roaming samba drumming; Circus Avago offers interactive circus skills; and Sam the Scam will perform comedy, magic and traditional fairground-style tricks.
Why 2026 is notable
The move to free admission is particularly significant. Organisers say the aim is to make the Sports more affordable, encourage families to visit and get more people participating in outdoor and traditional sports. They’re also continuing sustainability measures, including a water-bottle filling station to reduce single-use plastic.
