Unusual but comfortable and welcoming

We stayed for a weekend in late September – exploring the town and walking nearby.

It has to be said that the first approach to the hotel look unpromising since most of the accommodation is in the form of small bungalow-like rooms along the front drive or in a two-storey block near the rear entrance – with external staircase. In short, the accommodation looks rather like a US motel and this looks unconventional to the typical UK eye, especially given the attractive Victorian building that is the hub of the hotel (restaurant/bar/lounge). However, it’s a system that works very well in the US and it works very well here too.
That initial appearance is really the only significant downside we found with the hotel

We had one of the bungalows very close to reception and, inside, it was very roomy, with decent amounts of cupboard and drawer space, three chairs and still a lot of available floor space. Although the decoration was a bit dated to our taste, everything was clean and well maintained and all the systems (heat, lights, hot water worked nicely).
The dining room where we had breakfast looks over a very pretty garden area two two sides. The breakfast was simply excellent with a good range of cold buffet items and some extremely good local produce in the -made-to-order cooked breakfast. Breakfast and reception staff were all very friendly and efficient. We didn’t eat in at dinner-time so cannot comment on the food then but the ambiance in the evening certainly looked very cosy and welcoming.

The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from both the village/town centre of Bowness and the ferry stop, depending on which exit you use, so the location is extremely handy.

One note of caution if you are less mobile; the hotel site and the surrounding streets are quite hilly (this is the nature of Bowness) so you may want to bear this in mind.

Overall we found the hotel very comfortable and welcoming and greatly enjoyed our stay there. .

Could have stayed longer

Everything about our stay was perfect from the friendly staff to the excellent room which being disabled was perfect for our needs. This was our sec ond visit and it lived up to our expectations. THANK YOU Mr Glover 30th September 2013

Visit to the Burn How

This was the latest in a number of visits we have paid to the hotel over the years and we have always been pleased with the reception we have received, the room we have been allocated and the food in the restaurant. This year was no exception. Mr Francis 30th September 2013

Chilled Weekend

Booked last minute and got a room in The Lodge which was very clean and comfortable. Hotel set in lovely gardens only 5 minutes walk to the centre of Bowness.
Breakfast was first class with an amazing choice of fresh fruits, pastries, cereals etc. The selection of cooked meals was very good and very tasty.
The only negative was squeaky floorboards in the room which I accept can be expected in a building of this age Mr Dodds 30th September 2013

Enjoyable Break

We had a lovely couple of days, staff and food were excellent but the room decor was rather dated and the WFI did not work unless we hung over the balcony. Would certainly go back again though. Mrs Waring 28th September 2013

Super Quality hotel

The Burn How significantly exceeds its 3star status in accommodation, presentation and the quality and style of food. The staff in this comfortable hotel are friendly and the service excellent. My wife and I were impressed witn our first stay and this more recent two night break lived up to our expectations. Mr Abel 23rd September 2013

Thank you for a wonderful stay

As two elderly widows, one of whom had never visited the Lake District before, we were not sure what to expect or how we would be received in hotels. The Burn How gave us a lovely comfortable room, truly beautiful food and the most friendly and helpful staff you could wish for. Thank you Burn How, I hope one day we will be able to revisit and will be recommending you to everyone we know. Mrs Nicholls 23rd September 2013
